Sporting
Clays

Sporting Clays
began in the early 1900's in England where game bird hunters
sought to find the best method for practicing their wing
shooting skills. These shotgun enthusiasts could practice
their sport by shooting "Clay" targets thrown at various
heights, angles, and speeds that simulated shots they could
expect to encounter when going a field in pursuit of winged
game.
Sporting
Clay shooters at Quail Run shoot multiple clay target
presentations at each of 20 shooting stations. A beautiful
cottonwood creek bottom provides the backdrop to Colorado's
finest Sporting Clay course. The fully automated course
is specifically designed to accommodate the novice or
occasional shooter, as well as the seasoned competitor.
A wide variety of clay targets are presented including
specialty targets.
Five Stand

5-Stand is a
sport shooting game that provides the shooter with the
ultimate in enjoyment and variety. Eight automatic trap
machines are connected to a completely automated computer
system and the target combinations are endless. Beginn ing
shooters, as well as intermediate and advanced, enjoy the
array of targets that can be practiced, all from a single
shooting station. This is the perfect place for a quick tune
up or to practice that difficult shot that always seems to get
away.
This is truly a fun
event. For group gatherings both large and small, the
5-Stand lends itself to a high degree of social interaction.
Hunting and Sporting Dogs

If your interest
is spending the day hunting
Pheasant,
Chukar, Quail or Hungarian Partridge, you will enjoy a high success rate and exceptional
upland bird habitat at Quail Run.. Bring your dog or use our popular guide
service for the perfect day in the field. Many of our hunters
find our location so convenient they can be in the field in
the morning and back at the office by noon! Our hunting is
open September 1 through March 31.
For dog
training activities, Quail Run members
enjoy year round access to the hunting and dog training
fields. Birds are available year
round for training purposes.
The hunting and
training areas at
Quail Run offer varied terrain and all have
direct access to water and shade. Whether your preference is
Cottonwood Creek bottoms where heavy thickets and willows are the norm, or
more traditional field hunting areas planted in milo, millet,
corn, sunflowers and oats, quality time for both you and your
dog is assured.
Skeet

Skeet is a clay target
game that was invented in 1920. The name skeet is an old
Scandinavian word for shoot. The inventors of the game
intended to use it as a means of improving their bird hunting
skills.
A regular round of skeet
consists of shooting twenty-four targets from eight different
stations laid out in a semi-circle; a twenty-fifth shot is a
repeat of your first miss, or, if you don't miss any shots,
you shoot two at the Station 8 Low House (hitting all of the
targets is known as a "straight"). The targets you
shoot are a combination of singles and doubles from two trap
houses called the High House and the Low House.
Trap

Trap is the
most popular shotgun shooting sport in America with some
55,000 active shooters they estimated 82.5 Million registered
targets per year. There are three basic types of Trap shooting
the events, Handicap and Doubles.
16-yard
event: In the 16-yard event, the shooters stand "on the
16-yard line" which is 16 yards behind the trap-house. The
trap throws targets that will fly from 48 to 52 yards from the
shooter. Most targets are shot when they are about 36 yards
from the shooter. Targets are thrown at varying angles within
a range of 45 degrees to left or right of straightaway.
Handicap: In this event, the shooter stands anywhere
from 17 to 27 yards behind the traphouse, depending on his/her
previous scores. The better the previous scores, the farther
back you are "pushed."
Doubles: This event is also shot from the 16-yard line.
Unlike the regulation 16-yard and handicap events, a pair of
targets are released simultaneously. Double targets follow a
set course, usually 35 degrees to left and right of
straightaway. The shooter has one shot for each target. A
standard round of doubles is 25 "pair" - 50 targets.
Trap shoots may be informal practice events or "Registered
Shoots". To shoot registered targets, you must be a member of
the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA).
In registered trap, your targets are all recorded by the ATA,
and you will be placed in different classifications, according
to your previous scores. In addition, your average is
published each year in the Official ATA Average Book.
National Shooting Sports Foundation research indicates that
the average shooter breaks 13 out of 25 targets on the first
try at trapshooting and gradually improves through the high
teens into the low 20s. A perfect 25 is a reasonable goal for
the novice trapshooter.
